Governor Polis and Colorado Students Celebrate Decision Day 2026
Coloradans showcase their postsecondary pride and encourage students to reach their full potential
DENVER - Today, Governor Polis and the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) are proud to recognize the upcoming Decision Day 2026, celebrating Colorado students as they commit to colleges, universities, workforce training programs, apprenticeships or military service.
“Colorado is the best state to live, work, start a business, and build your skills. I am excited for students as they start the next step in their careers. Colorado is home to some of the best colleges and universities in the nation. Whether students are seeking a PhD, a welding certificate from a community college, or an apprenticeship degree, Colorado offers a way for every learner to gain the skills necessary to thrive,” said Governor Polis.
Observed nationally on May 1, Decision Day marks a milestone moment for high school seniors and other learners who are finalizing plans for life after graduation. Across Colorado, schools, colleges, community organizations and families are honoring students for their perseverance and celebrating the many pathways that lead to meaningful careers and economic opportunity.
“Decision Day is about celebrating choice and possibility,” said Executive Director JB Holston. “Whether a student is enrolling in a two- or four-year institution, pursuing a credential or apprenticeship, or entering the workforce or military, each pathway represents an important step toward their goals and Colorado’s future.”
Based on Colorado Department of Higher Education, Colorado Community College System and Colorado Department of Labor and Employment offerings and workforce initiatives, the state’s postsecondary landscape offers more than 250 opportunities across public colleges and universities. This, alongside a growing number of short-term credentials, career and technical education programs and work-based learning opportunities are designed to meet the evolving needs of students and employers alike.
CDHE encourages students to wear apparel representing their chosen path and participate in school or community Decision Day celebrations. Students and families are also encouraged to share their plans on social media using #DecisionDayCO, #iDecided, and #DecisionDay26. Supporters can post photos on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn tagging @CoHigherEd.
For students still exploring their options, CDHE reminds families that opportunities remain available beyond May 1, including rolling college admissions, certificate programs and workforce training opportunities.
On Decision Day, Coloradans are encouraged to wear apparel from their alma mater, favorite school or future program to rally in support of students on their path to postsecondary success. The department also offers resources to help schools host events and involve families in supporting students’ goals. Visit the Decision Day webpage for more information.
